Orange blossom

Orange blossoms can be extracted in several ways. Overall, it offers a floral fragrance, with nuances of white flowers, citrus facets and a slightly aromatic note.

What does orange blossom smell like in perfumery?

The bitter orange tree is a tree from which many products for the perfume industry can be derived. In particular, 2 distinct products can be obtained from the flowers: neroli and orange blossom, which have different properties.

-Neroli: Neroli is the result of steam distillation of fresh orange flower. This distillation yields neroli essence and orange blossom water. Neroli essence is used in perfumery for its fresh, floral and aromatic facets. Orange blossom water, also known as hydrolate, is mainly used in cooking and cosmetics.

-Orange blossom: Orange blossom absolute is extracted from orange blossom petals by enfleurage or solvent extraction. Enfleurage is an old-fashioned method that is rarely used today, as it is very time-consuming and yields little. We therefore prefer extraction with volatile solvents. Orange blossoms have a more honeyed, heady olfactory profile than neroli.

Neroli and orange blossom may be combined with numerous raw materials from all possible olfactory families. They can be used in enveloping perfumes that stay close to the skin, as well as in fragrances with a strong trail. These two notes can also be added to accords to create other notes such as white flowers, fruits…

Why does orange blossom smell good?

Orange blossom owes its bewitching fragrance to its odorant compounds, such as nerolidol, methyl anthranilate, linalool... These molecules give it its characteristic floral, aromatic and fruity scents. Its complex fragrance makes it a prized ingredient in many perfume compositions. When orange blossom can't be integrated into a perfume from its natural origins, we often incorporate key molecules from its composition, such as linalool, methyl anthranylate…
