SUMMARY

What does the word cashmeran mean?

The name "cashmeran" derives from its resemblance to cashmere, a luxurious fiber known for its softness and warmth. The etymology of the term is linked to its creator, IFF (International Flavors and Fragrances), which developed the note in 1965. Cashmeran is a synthetic ingredient composed of different molecules, giving it a distinctive scent.

In the beginning…

The history of cashmeran dates back to the 1960s, when IFF (International Flavors and Fragrances) began research into a revolutionary synthetic scent. Finally discovered by Dr. John Hall in 1970, this molecule opened up the world of perfume even further. At the time, perfumers were searching for new molecules and ingredients to create unique and distinctive fragrances. Cashmeran was created as an alternative to expensive and rare natural ingredients such as ambergris and sandalwood.

The aim was to capture the warm, woody, ambery qualities of these precious raw materials while offering a more economical and sustainable solution. The result was a versatile synthetic molecule that quickly gained popularity with perfumers and fragrance houses. Over the decades, cashmeran has continued to evolve and adapt to the changing trends and demands of the perfume industry. It has become a key element in many iconic fragrances, contributing to their unique character and recognizable olfactory signature.

Today, cashmeran is widely used in fragrance creation, offering a sustainable and creative alternative to natural ingredients. Its history illustrates the constant evolution of the perfume industry, where the search for new molecules and new olfactory sensations continues to inspire perfumers to push back the boundaries of fragrance creation.

The creation of cashmeran molecules

The process of creating the cashmeran molecule involves several stages of chemical synthesis. Here is a simplified description of the process:

 • Raw materials: The raw materials used in cashmeran synthesis are generally petrochemicals. Acetone and ethylene are two of the main compounds used.

• Aldol condensation: The first step is an aldol condensation reaction. Acetone reacts with ethylene to form an intermediate called dihydrojasmone.

• Cyclization: The dihydrojasmone is then cyclized, which means it is transformed into a more complex cyclic structure. This cyclization is achieved by a specific chemical reaction.

• Rearrangement : The resulting cyclic product then undergoes a molecular rearrangement process to form the characteristic structure of cashmeran.

• Purification: After the reaction, cashmeran is often present as a mixture with other compounds. It must therefore be purified to obtain the pure cashmeran molecule. Various purification techniques, such as distillation or chromatography, can be used.

• Analysis and quality control: Once the pure cashmeran molecule has been obtained, it is analyzed and subjected to quality controls to ensure that it meets the standards and specifications required by the perfume and cosmetics industry.
