Whether you’ve been loyal to the same scent for years or are a fan of mixing & matching, we all want to keep our perfumes for as long as possible. When it comes to storing your perfume, conventional wisdom is hard to beat. Even if the perfume world still has plenty of other secrets, in this blog we can shed some light on this subject.

How long can perfume be kept?

Perfumery professionals all agree that a fragrance doesn’t really have a date after which it can no longer be used. However, to ensure a unique olfactory experience for perfume lovers, most fragrance houses choose to include a use-by date on the packaging. Sometimes found on the bottom of the bottle, this date is usually 30 months. There’s no need for perfume addicts to worry: the perfume bottles tends to empty much more quickly than that!

In perfumery, there are no hard and fast rules. Nonetheless, fragrances still have a limited shelf life. Rather than relying on a date to judge how long a perfume should be kept, expert perfumers recommend focusing on the ingredients that compose them. Light, natural and citrus notes tend to deteriorate more quickly, while woody, amber and musky notes are more stable.

The lifespan of a perfume: trust your senses

The first clue as to whether your perfume can still be used is simply its smell. If you instantly recognize the scents that made you fall in love with your perfume, there’s no reason to get rid of it!

At Bon Parfumeur, we’ve chosen to create clean perfumes with impressive compositions: our perfumes don’t contain any UV filters or dyes. Depending on the lighting and the age of your perfume, its color may vary significantly. There’s no need to panic: this is perfectly normal and doesn’t affect the quality in any way!

How can perfume be kept for a long time?

To maintain the chemistry between you and your fragrance, it’s best to store your perfume bottle away from light, humidity and heat. Storing your perfume in the bathroom may seem convenient when you’re getting ready in the morning but it’s not a good place to store perfume as it may go bad: your perfume may not like the humid atmosphere and changing temperature. Don’t worry about your collection of perfumes: you can display your perfume bottle in the middle of your living room or in your bedroom or keep them at your side without affecting their scent!

How long can a perfume be stored? We don’t have any definitive answer for you. To find out everything there is to know about storing your fragrances, you can always have a look at this article on storing an unopened perfume or read our advice to find out whether it should be kept in the fridge.
